About the business

With the support of hardworking volunteers and a board of professionals, South West Community Care successfully provides outstanding aged care services across the wider Bunbury region.

Through every step of the process, South West Community Care pride themselves on looking after the community in every way possible. From the volunteers they recruit, the individuals they serve and to the businesses they work with – as their tagline reads: “Local and compassionate care from our family to yours.”.

Jo Saunders has been working for South West Community Care for 5 years now, with the last 18 months as CEO of the organisation. Originally working as a Scheduler to then taking on the Human Resource Manager role to now running the show as CEO – Jo has witnessed South West Community Care’s development throughout the years.

More recently, in the last 12 months, a big game changer to business operations was working with the neighborhood accounting firm – Breathe Accounting. Jo had worked with Breathe Accounting previously so she knew she could count on the team to assist with the organisation’s goals.

“Breathe is not only a local business but they hold many similar values to what South West Community Care pride themselves on. They support others, want to help the community and are passionate about what they do.”

The Problem

A year ago, South West Community Care needed to recruit a Chief Financial Officer. Trying to fill this position presented numerous challenges. Being a not-for-profit located in Bunbury as well as trying to be competitive in the job market proved to be difficult. Leaving the not-for-profit struggling to fill the CFO role.

Due to the turbulent changes within the aged care industry, South West Community Care needed the support of reliable and experienced financial professionals.

“We needed support to make sure our business was operating in a way that was sustainable for the future and as we experience significant industry changes to ensure that the organisation was the strongest it could be.”

South West Community Care saw these obstacles and chose a different approach – reaching out to an external accounting firm. Although Jo was already familiar with Breathe Accounting, the organisation researched a selection of other accounting firms to compare offerings. After some deliberation, the choice was obvious – Breathe was unmatched.

“While we were working with Reon directly we had access to multiple people in their team. For example, Sharon who’s an expert in Xero as well as payroll and the expertise from a whole group of professionals. Rather than relying on the single CFO.”

The Solution

When Southwest Community Care joined Breathe Accounting, changes were instantaneous.

“Breathe Accounting was really motivated to help our business achieve. They have a calm and professional approach, they are not scared to do the work. Their name is really quite fitting. Their goal is to help you breathe.”

Jo (CEO) along with the Executive Business Manager found great support in Breathe Accounting. Breathe was able to look beyond the figures and offer long term solutions in all aspects with their impressive team and network of professionals.

“When you work with Breathe, you’re working with a whole team of specialists who are able to back you and your specific business needs.”

Amongst many projects, what has been impactful to South West Community Care has been Reon from Breathe Accounting who has assisted greatly with reliable and high level reporting. As Jo and her team report to a board of management, reporting is essential to analyse progress. Conducted six weekly, Reon sits in on meetings with the board to present, explain and answer questions. This has built transparency and a greater understanding for South West Community Care, who feel confident in their future projection.

The Results

“As a not-for-profit organisation, South West Community Care needs to utilise funds optimally in order to continue to help consumers. And that’s exactly what Breathe has helped us do.”

Breathe Accounting has helped South West Community Care build strength moving forward in a constantly changing environment. Now, they hold clarity for where their business is headed, even with the reform the industry faces.

“You can sleep a little easier at night. Accounting isn’t my thing. But I know I’ve got a team of people looking out for the organisation. And, if we’ve got any worries or concerns, all we need to do is give them a call and they’re there to help us.”

Breathe Accounting has transformed operations at South West Community Care, offering incredible assistance with financial projects, efficient on-call help and improving the overall wellbeing of the organisation.

“We feel more driven to achieve because of the progress we’ve made to date. We feel very optimistic for the future. In a challenging industry, we feel like this work we’ve done with Breathe is going to put us in a really strong place.”Definitely would recommend Breathe Accounting, and for several reasons. Breathe is local, nothing is ever too much trouble for them and their quality of service is incomparable.”
